Management Consulting
When I first got involved in management
consulting, I was surprised at how easy it was to get into.
After all, I had never worked as a management consultant
before. I had no formal business experience, no business
training, and basically little knowledge of how the business
world works. I knew that management consultants salaries were
excellent, and I also knew that they would hire articulate,
intelligent people fresh out of college. I thought I would give
it a try on a whim, and it worked! Although I started out as
the low man on the totem pole, nevertheless I was a business
consultant. I was ecstatic!
It took very little time to get into it. Management
consulting, once you get down to it, is mostly common sense. Of
course, there are some things I had to learn. I had to know
about how business finance works, what types of goals
businesses have for their management consulting, and other
stuff like that. It took a good six months before I was really
into the swing of things. Nevertheless, a lot of the stuff that
I was doing in terms of business strategy was pretty
obvious.
Sometimes, all it takes is an outside eye. If, for example
you are having relationship troubles, what do you do? Most
people consult their friends or family. It gives them a fresh
perspective, and allows them to get a more active eye on the
situation. Management consulting is just like that, only for
business management. They are not necessarily looking for
business professionals. As a matter of fact, sometimes
outsiders give the best advice. They are just looking for
intelligent people who understand how companies work. If you
understand office politics, interpersonal dynamics,
communications, economics, and a few other things, you're all
set. It might sound like a lot at first, but it is really not
that hard.
One of the great things about management consulting is that
you get to feel proud of what you do. As a management
consultant, I can help my clients. I provide a more
streamlined, efficient workplace. This is obviously good for
the business because it allows them to save money, but it is
also usually good for the employees as well. They get to work
in a more friendly environment, get to have more effective
communications with the boss, and often are more appreciated as
a result of the work of the business consultants. All in all,
it is a good deal for everyone.
